Rotary brushes are those that have been manufactured into a cylinder, often spiral or paddle-wheel style. They are commonly mounted onto a shaft and motorized to spin around an axis at high speeds, allowing them to brush more efficiently. Our custom cylindrical brushes are made from a strong, lightweight, and balanced polymer tube.
A rotary cylinder brush features bristles surrounding the inner core. They may be constructed in many sizes with a variety of bristle materials, but are usually made from carbon steel, nylon, brass, polypropylene, or natural filament such as horse hair or hog bristle. The bristles can be stapled, glued, or even hand tied to the core.
Since 1951, Gordon Brush® has been manufacturing standard and custom cylindrical brushes. We can create custom brushes of varying sizes and styles for your specific application.
Cylinder brushes are used for many general applications including applying, pushing, removing, cleaning, or spreading. They are typically used in industrial applications to clean large objects or to transport items down a conveyor belt. Machinery is usually cleaned with an automated system, and cylinder brushes are ideal for this situation. They are used to remove particles like chips, dirt, oil, rust, corrosion, and other particulates.
Industrial cylinder brushes are frequently used for conveyor cleaning, as well as brushing substrate material on a production line. For many industries, rotary brushes are a standard practice for these reasons, particularly in these industries:
While wide cylinder brushes are used for large scale cleaning, smaller cylinder brushes are used for more delicate applications. These rotary brushes are used for applications like cleaning the circuit board of a computer before it is installed. For these, it's imperative that there is no contamination or particles on the part, and cylinder brushes are perfect for cleaning every crevice.
Specific uses for custom cylindrical brushes can include, but are not limited to:
Sizes and styles of your cylinder brush almost completely depend on your application, and Gordon Brush® can customize your brushes to meet any of your design requirements. We offer a wide range of hole patterns, hole densities and materials for rotary brushes; your possibilities are virtually unlimited.
The bristles on our cylinder brushes can be created in a variety of construction styles, depending on your application needs. We offer constructions like:
Helical Construction: These are designed with heavy duty, cage-type castings onto a shaft. Multiple strip brushes are attached to the core, surrounding it and forming a cylinder. These work well for heavy duty, industrial applications.
Spiral Wound Construction: These brushes offer more versatility in brush diameter and density. The filaments on this style are wound directly into the shaft, meaning the brush can be removed and rewound many times.
Metal Spiral Wound Construction: In addition to bristles being wound around the core, metal can also be wound on the outside of the filaments. This can be used for cleaning shafts or wiping a product as it moves through the brush. They can also hold products or slow their movement.
Full Fill Construction: This style consists of single rows of tufts going all the way around the diameter. This is ideal for sweeping dust, sand, soot, and other small particles from products.
Herringbone or Chevron Pattern: This brush is designed with a “V” row pattern that directs the dirt toward the center of the hopper for faster sweeping. This pattern is popular for outside sweeping brushes because of the large empty spaces between rows that allow it to more effectively grab larger items and debris.
Rotary Staple Set Construction: Staple set rotary brushes require a core that has holes drilled into it and then filaments are stapled into the holes. These brushes can be more economical, depending on the application.
Wheel Rotary Brushes: These are like cylinder brushes, but the outside diameter is larger than the length of the brush, making it a flatter wheel shape. These are made from the same materials as a cylinder brush.
Depending on the application, a brush can be designed with several different material types for both the core and the filaments. To maximize the life of your brush, it’s important to match the materials to the application requirements. Using a brush with the best filament that will perform its duty with a minimal amount of applied pressure will increase your brush’s longevity.
Rotary brush cores are typically made with a wood, plastic, or metal material. We offer cylinder brush cores from materials including:
The type of filament material that is used depends on what kind of characteristics are needed from your brush. Depending on the material, the bristles of the cylinder brush can be soft, stiff, thin, or thick. They can also provide different characteristics like water absorption, chemical and heat resistance, and flexibility.
Gordon Brush® offers a wide range of filament materials, including:
Brass: Using brass filament brushes provide a softer filament than steel or stainless steel wire, meaning they will not scratch harder metals. They are great for applications involving static reduction, operating temperatures of up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit, and electrical conduction.
Bronze: Bronze is a harder, stiffer wire than brass, but offers many advantages including corrosion resistance and operating ability up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Bronze wire is typically used for applications like cleaning machine parts where sparks might cause a fire and industrial static reduction brushes.
Nylon: Nylon cylinder brushes are used for many applications including scrubbing, dusting, and cleaning conveyed objects or conveyor belts. They offer excellent fatigue life, good abrasion resistance, low to moderate absorption of water, and many more advantages.
Stainless Steel: These brushes are best for working on stainless steel and aluminum fabricated products, as well as food-contact applications and higher heat situations. They can work in operating conditions up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit.
Polyester: This material is less stiff than polypropylene and nylon and offers a lower water absorption rate. It also has great high-temperature oxidation resistance and is a great, cost-effective option for cylinder brush applications.
Polypropylene: Polypropylene brushes are ideal for high moisture applications including water-based part washing and conveyors exposed to environmental conditions. They also offer good chemical resistance.
Tampico: This material is created from vegetable fibers of the Agave Lechuguilla plant and offers superior water absorption and retention. It can be used for both wet and dry scrubbing, washing, polishing, and dusting.
